CNG Price in Nigeria Today: How Much You Save per Kilometre vs Petrol

CNG in Nigeria is sold by the standard cubic metre (SCM), not the litre, which makes it hard to compare with petrol at a glance. This guide shows what CNG costs right now, what an SCM actually means, and how much you save per kilometre in a car, a bus and a keke.

Prices at a glance (October 2026): CNG sells for about ₦200 to ₦400 per SCM depending on the station and operator. Petrol is ₦1,350–₦1,450 per litre. One SCM of CNG takes you about as far as one litre of petrol.

For comparison: petrol is ₦1,350–₦1,385 a litre in Lagos and ₦1,410–₦1,450 in Abuja (October 2026).

Prices differ because Nigeria’s CNG market has several operators (NGML, NIPCO Gas and others), each setting its own retail price. NGML’s increase to ₦380 per SCM from ₦230 raised prices at many stations, while some independents still sell lower.

What is an SCM, and why isn’t CNG sold in litres?

CNG is natural gas squeezed to very high pressure (around 200 bar) so it fits in a cylinder. Because gas takes up different amounts of space at different pressures and temperatures, it’s measured in standard cubic metres: the amount of gas that would fill one cubic metre at normal air pressure.

What matters for your pocket is this: one SCM contains roughly the same energy as one litre of petrol. Natural gas has about 35 megajoules per cubic metre, and petrol about 34 megajoules per litre. So if your car does 10 km on a litre of petrol, expect roughly 10 km from an SCM of CNG.

Some stations quote per kg. One kilogram of CNG is about 1.4 SCM, so a price of ₦380 per SCM is roughly ₦530 per kg.

How much you save per kilometre

Using ₦380 per SCM for CNG and ₦1,385 per litre for petrol:

Private car (about 10 km per litre)

Per 100 km₦13,850₦3,800₦10,050 (73%)
Per month (1,500 km)₦207,750₦57,000₦150,750

Minibus / Sienna (about 7 km per litre)

Per 100 km₦19,800₦5,400₦14,400
Per month (4,000 km)₦791,400₦217,100₦574,300

Keke (about 30 km per litre)

Per 100 km₦4,600₦1,270₦3,350
Per day (150 km)₦6,900₦1,900₦5,000

At a ₦200–₦250 station, your savings are even bigger. At ₦400, they’re slightly smaller, but still about 70% cheaper than petrol.

Keke drivers: see our electric keke price guide. Charging an electric keke at home works out at about ₦1,700 per 100 km, similar to CNG, but it needs a new vehicle or a conversion.

Why your real savings may be lower

The numbers above are fuel-only. Drivers report several things that eat into them:

  • Queues: some Abuja stations have seen waits of over six hours (Nairametrics). For commercial drivers, that’s lost trips.
  • Detours: Nigeria had just over 90 CNG stations in 23 states in August 2026, so many drivers must drive out of their way to refuel.
  • Petrol backup: when you run out of gas far from a station, you’re back to petrol prices.
  • Conversion cost: you need to earn back ₦350,000–₦650,000+ first (see our CNG conversion price guide).

Why haven’t fares fallen? Even where drivers save on fuel, commuters in Abuja report that transport fares haven’t dropped. That’s because many vehicles still run on petrol and operators face other rising costs.

How to check the CNG price before you drive to a station

  1. Call ahead or check the station’s social media. Prices can differ by ₦150+ per SCM between operators.
  2. Look at the pump display. It should show SCM (or kg), unit price and total. Make sure the meter starts at zero.
  3. Know your cylinder size. A typical car cylinder holds about 10–15 SCM, so a full fill at ₦380 costs roughly ₦3,800–₦5,700. If you’re charged far more, ask questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of CNG in Nigeria today?

About ₦200–₦400 per SCM in September 2026, depending on the operator and location. NGML’s rate for cars and buses is ₦380 per SCM.

How much is CNG per kg in Nigeria?

One kg of CNG is about 1.4 SCM, so ₦380 per SCM is roughly ₦530 per kg.

Is CNG cheaper than petrol?

Yes. At current prices CNG costs roughly 70–85% less per kilometre than petrol, before conversion costs and queue time.

How far can one SCM take me?

Roughly as far as one litre of petrol. For a typical car that’s about 10 km.
