With petrol at ₦1,350–₦1,450 a litre, converting your car to compressed natural gas (CNG) is one of the few ways left to cut your fuel bill sharply. But what does conversion actually cost, what do you get for the money, and how long before the savings pay you back?
We pulled together the latest costs reported by drivers, the government’s Presidential CNG Initiative and conversion partners. Here’s what to expect in 2026.

Nairametrics reported in September 2026 that conversion costs range from ₦325,000 to ₦650,000 and above, depending on the vehicle, and that cost remains one of the biggest barriers for motorists.
What’s Included in a CNG conversion?
A proper conversion is more than a gas cylinder in your boot. A complete job should include:
- The conversion kit: pressure regulator (reducer), gas injectors, electronic control unit (ECU) and wiring
- A certified CNG cylinder: this is usually the most expensive single part, and its size decides your range
- High-pressure gas lines and valves
- A filling valve and a switch so you can change between petrol and CNG
- Installation and tuning by trained technicians
- Safety checks and certification of the installation
Most conversions are dual-fuel: your car still runs on petrol when the gas runs out. That matters, because CNG stations are still scarce outside major cities.
Ask what the quote includes. A cheap price that leaves out the cylinder, certification or labour isn’t a cheap conversion.
Who Gets CNG Conversion Free or Subsidized?
The federal government’s Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles (PiCNG & EV) offers free or discounted conversions to commercial operators. Under the scheme’s published terms:
- Transport union members (such as NURTW) have been offered free kits and installation
- Ride-hailing drivers (via partners like Uber and Bolt) have been offered kits at a 50% discount with free installation
- Private car owners generally pay the full cost

Can you pay in instalments?
Yes. Government-backed financing is available through CreditCorp and partner institutions:
- A ₦2.5 billion PCNGi credit scheme launched in May 2025 to fund conversions
- Repayment periods of one to three years have been announced, with some schemes letting drivers repay through a small top-up at the pump
- Interest rates reported range from about 9% on some schemes to 15–20% on others, depending on your creditworthiness
Check the actual rate and total repayment before signing, not just the monthly figure.
How Fast Will Conversion Pay for Itself?
Here’s a simple payback calculation for a typical car.
Our assumptions:
- The car does 10 km per litre on petrol
- Petrol costs ₦1,385 a litre (Lagos, September 2026)
- CNG costs ₦380 per standard cubic metre (SCM). That’s the price NNPC Gas Marketing set for cars and buses. Stations have been reported charging anywhere from ₦200 to ₦400
- One SCM of CNG gives roughly the same distance as one litre of petrol (they contain similar amounts of energy)

On a ₦650,000 conversion, you’d earn the cost back after about 6,500 km of driving on gas:

Real-world check: drivers interviewed by Nairametrics reported big savings. One Abuja commuter said their weekly transport spending fell from ₦50,000–₦60,000 to about ₦15,000. But savings shrink if you spend hours queuing, or have to drive far to find a station.
The costs people forget
- Queue time: in Abuja, some stations have reported waits of over six hours. For a taxi driver, that’s lost income.
- Boot space: the cylinder takes up much of the boot in most sedans.
- Extra maintenance: some drivers report replacing spark plugs more often after conversion.
- Driving to stations: Nigeria had just over 90 CNG stations across 23 states as of August 2026, according to Nairametrics, heavily concentrated in Lagos, Abuja and a few other cities.
Safety: only use an approved centre
After a cylinder explosion in Benin City involving an illegally modified cylinder, PCNGi’s programme director Michael Oluwagbemi urged motorists to use only accredited conversion centres.
The official partners and regulators include the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Named conversion partners have included NIPCO Gas, Portland Gas, Fix It 45, ABG Oil and Gas and the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT).
Before you convert, check that:
- the centre is on PCNGi’s approved list (ask to see their accreditation)
- the cylinder is new, certified and dated, never second-hand or “refurbished”
- you get a certificate or documentation for the installation
- your insurer is informed, since unapproved conversions may affect your cover
